Total organ donations in US jumped more than 5% in 2000

Last Updated: 2001-04-16 17:01:46 EDT (Reuters Health)

WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) - Total organ donations rose by 5.4% in 2000 compared with 1999, according to data released today by the US Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Health Resources and Services Administration and the United Network for Organ Sharing as part of National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week.

"We are encouraged by the progress that has been made in the last year, but there's still a very long way to go," HSS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said in a statement. Thompson went on to note in the statement that more than 75,000 Americans are seeking transplants--far more than the donors available.

In 2000, organ transplants increased to 22,827 from 21,655 in 1999. Cadaveric donations rose 2.7%, from 5825 in 1999 to 5984 in 2000, while the number of living donors increased by 16.5%, from 4747 in 1999 to 5532 in 2000.

"We must remember that increasing living donation alone will not save enough lives. We must continue to educate the public about the importance of organ donation, which is what National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week is all about," Dr. Patricia Adams, president of the United Network for Organ Sharing, said in the statement.
