The HCV Pipeline -What new treatments are on the horizon?

Despite the availability of interferons, their treatment efficacy is moderate at best. Fortunately, the search for new treatment options is ongoing. The investigational treatments that are currently most promising include:

  1. Thymosin alpha 1 - This immune system enhancer (ISE) is currently in Phase III trials. This therapy is being studied for concurrent administration with pegylated interferon therapy to improve sustained response rates.

  2. Omega interferon - Phase II trials are underway to determine the effectiveness of omega interferon in patients with chronic Hepatitis C infections. Initial results have been very encouraging. The studies are also evaluating a brand new dosage delivery system that would eliminate the need for injections of interferon.

It is worth noting that the most recent breakthrough in HCV treatment is the approval of pegylated interferons. Treatment with pegylated interferon in combination with ribavirin has achieved some of the highest response rates to date
